The PSTN landline network is being switched off across Europe — and every lift telephone connected to it needs replacing. SafeLine SL6 is the direct upgrade: 4G, 5G, and VoIP-ready, fully compliant with EN81-28, and configurable wirelessly from your phone.
The end of an era — and the timelines you need to know
Across Europe, 2G (GSM) was introduced in the early 1990s and is now being phased out country by country. Switzerland completed its switch-off in early 2023. France is following, with Orange targeting 2026. In Germany, Deutsche Telekom plans June 2028 and Vodafone Germany September 2028. The UK PSTN shutdown is confirmed for 2027.
Even before formal switch-off dates, mobile operators are no longer replacing failing 2G equipment. Practical coverage is already shrinking as frequencies are reallocated to 4G and 5G. For lift companies, this means the problem is live now — not at the deadline.
What 2G, 4G, GSM, and LTE actually mean for your lift
When you see these terms, they refer to generations of mobile network technology used to connect a lift telephone to the outside world. GSM is the 2G standard — the one being phased out. 4G and LTE (a 4G technology) are the current standard. 5G is next. SafeLine SL6 supports all three, with automatic fallback between mobile and fixed networks — so your lift stays connected regardless of which network is available at the site.
Is your current SafeLine device already 4G-ready?
Depending on the year of manufacture, your device may already support 4G — or may be upgradeable with approved components and firmware, rather than a full replacement. SafeLine’s field guide makes this quick to determine on-site. It covers:
- Instant device identification — model, generation, and firmware for GL1, GL6, and SL6
- 4G capability check — clear indicators for “4G-ready” vs. “upgrade required.”
- SIM verification — confirm that the installed SIM supports 4G/LTE and the correct APN settings
- Compatibility matrix — which modules, antennas, and accessories match each device generation
- Swap and upgrade steps — illustrated instructions with ESD notes and connector guidance
- Testing and handover — signal checks, test call, event log review, and documentation
