2G, 4G, or GSM and LTE – what does that mean for my lift?
Historically, lift emergency phones were connected via traditional landline (PSTN) phone lines. As technology developed and landlines started to disappear, the industry shifted to mobile connectivity. The first widely used option was GSM, the mobile standard for 2G (second-generation) networks.
Over time, mobile infrastructure improved, and 4G (and LTE, which is a 4G technology) also started to be used in lift communication. So, when you see terms like 2G, 4G, GSM, or LTE, they simply refer to different generations of mobile network technology that can be used to connect your lift to the outside world.
End of an era
Across Europe, 2G (GSM) was introduced in the early 1990s and is now being phased out on a country-by-country, operator-by-operator basis. Switzerland has already switched 2G off (Swisscom in 2021; the last operator completed its shutdown by early 2023). France plans a gradual Orange 2G switch-off in 2026 (with SFR/Bouygues on similar timelines), while in Germany, Deutsche Telekom targets June 30, 2028, and Vodafone Germany plans September 2028.
Even before full switch-off, operators typically no longer replace failing 2G equipment, so practical coverage keeps shrinking as frequencies are refarmed to strengthen 4G and 5G capacity. As 2G availability continues to decline across Europe, Safeline evolves with the technology landscape – ensuring our solutions remain relevant, reliable, and ready for the future.
Ready for the future – with strong sustainability
For 30 years, SafeLine has focused exclusively on the needs of the lift industry. From day one, our products have been engineered for modern communication technologies while keeping longevity and sustainability at the core.
Durable by design
Devices like GL1, GL6, and SL6 are manufactured in robust metal enclosures to withstand demanding shaft environments and daily wear. The construction supports serviceability and refurbishment, extending product life and reducing waste.
Future-proof connectivity
Depending on the year of manufacture, SafeLine devices are already 4G-capable or can be upgraded to the latest standard with approved components and firmware—helping you stay ahead of 2G/3G sunsets and evolving network requirements.
Sustainability you can measure
-
Long lifecycle: Designed for years of reliable operation with access to replacement parts.
-
Repair over replace: Modular architecture enables targeted repairs and upgrades.
-
Resource efficiency: Metal housings are durable and recyclable at the end of life.
-
Smart operations: Remote configuration/diagnostics (where supported) reduces site visits and carbon impact.
Your next step
Unsure whether your SafeLine device is 4G-ready? Ask for our quick identification guide to check device generation and upgrade paths—or contact our support team for a recommended migration plan.
Practical guide for on-site professionals
SafeLine’s field guide streamlines every site visit—from quick device identification to verifying 4G readiness and choosing the correct parts. It shows, at a glance, whether a unit is 4G-capable or needs an upgrade, and reminds you to confirm that the installed SIM supports 4G/LTE.
If components must be replaced, the guide lists the exact kits with name, image, and part number, so there’s no guesswork. And if questions come up, our service team is on hand to help with compatibility, APN settings, and diagnostics.
What the guide covers
-
Instant device identification: Model, generation, and firmware at a glance (e.g., GL1, GL6, SL6).
-
4G capability check: Clear indicators for “4G-ready” vs. “upgrade required,” including required firmware/hardware.
-
SIM verification: How to confirm that the installed SIM (or eSIM, where applicable) supports 4G/LTE and the correct APN settings.
-
Compatibility matrix: Which modules, antennas, and accessories match each device generation?
-
Swap & upgrade steps: Illustrated, order-safe instructions with ESD notes and torque/connector guidance.
-
Testing & handover: Signal/registration checks, test call, event log review, and documentation tips.
